Struggling Reader 2

Attention all parents of struggling readers or anyone that just wants a great reading program, check out www.bookadventure.com.

I wish I had found this web site earlier - but it is by far the BEST reading incentive program that we have tried.

Log on to the FREE web site and you can enter your child's age, reading level and interests and presto - they give you a list of 25-100 books - complete with title, author, reading level, a brief description of the book and ISBN number. The majority of these books can be found in the local library and I bet some are on your own bookshelves (1st grade reading level includes Cat in the Hat, Biscuit, Give a Mouse a Cookie and Madeline).

I have found the easiest way to get the books is by going to your local library website (if they allow you to hold books online). I use the ISBN codes from the book list to quickly hold books that look interesting. Then the library calls me and I go pick up my pile of books. Seriously - today I picked up 17! Griffin was so excited about the Eric Carle book, From Head to Toe, he read it while I was checking out.

After you read a book, there is a short 5 question comprehensive test they take on the computer. The web site then tracks how many books they have read and they get 100 points a book.

The web site actually rewards the kids with small prizes like a free candy bar at Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory. We also have created our own incentives - exciting things like $1 and a trip to the Dollar Store or ice cream or a play date.

It is easy to fall in love with Book Adventure because:
  1. It is easy to use
  2. It is easy to track their progress individually
  3. They can read on their own
  4. You get lists of new books to discover and can say good-bye to reading the same thing over and over
  5. The kids love the incentives and are really encouraged to read just a couple more books to get to the next level
LOVE IT!
