Wednesday Night Knitting Club

Inspired by the New York Times Best Seller, The Friday Night Knitting Club,
I have decided to learn to knit. I have also been influenced by next door neighbor, Crystal, who owns a new Knit Store, with fabulous fall colored yarns that you just want to wrap around you. So even thought my grandmother taught me how to knit when I was about 6, I forgot everything and am very much a beginner.

I amazed Crystal (when she took me to the store to help pick out what I needed) when I asked why the knitting needles did not have a hole in them for the yarn to go through (think about it - sewing needles have a hole, why wouldn't knitting needles?). I have promised Piper a scarf - so there is no going back. So I have proudly taken up the needles (the ones without holes) and am learning this age old skill.

Crystal came over for my first lesson - and I must admit there was a connection on a level that I am sure women use to feel when they canned, quilted and worked together. Was I a natural? Well you can decide!

Here is my first attempt - see the holes. In case you were not sure - the holes are not a part of a pattern. Also, notice that it is in the shape of a triangle - Crystal tells me that I keep adding stitches. I started with 25 and now have about 38. Opps - hopefully I will improve! So a natural - NO, but an eager learner - yep!

I practice at night, while we are watching TV. I can see how this could become relaxing - but have not reached that point. Chris pointed out, when I snapped at him for talking to me while I was counting, "You sure don't seem to be enjoying this." Most of this was done while watching the Democratic Convention at night (maybe the holes are symbolic of holes in their policies!). Maybe things will go better with the Republican Convention this week... hmmm, perhaps which ever one comes out the best will win my vote! I could keep knitting all the way through the debates - this could change politics as we know it - one scarf at a time!

Cam,
You are too funny! I too am a novice knitter. I can only do the knit stitch; can't even purl (but I'm told it is fairly easy--just haven't gotten the hang of it yet). I did a gazillion scarves a few years ago and got kind of burnt out, but might pick it up again soon. YOU GO, GIRL! :)
