More Election '08

Did you watch the Rick Warren interviews with Obama and McCain? Chris and I were glued to the TV - it was such a refreshing and informative way to hear from the candidates! LOVED IT. Only wish it could have been longer. And I appreciate Rick Warren, as a Christian leader, shattering the negative image of a Christian (which much of the world, I am finding out, views as narrow minded, ignorant and bigoted) and instead was an example of common sense, compassion, mercy and one who seeks justice for the weak. This is the type of Christian I hope to be!

Dr. Martin Luther King, from his last Sunday sermon, said “There comes a time when one must take the position that is neither safe nor politic nor popular, but he must do it because conscience tells him it is right. I believe today that there is a need for all people of goodwill to come with a massive act of conscience and say in the words of the old Negro spiritual, We ain’t goin’ study war no more” This is the challenge facing modern man.”

Politico.com recongized the rise of the Evangelical Moderate. "Dr. Ronald Sider, president of Evangelicals for Social Action, explains the larger trend, saying, “Today there is a strong evangelical center emerging that agrees that a biblically balanced agenda has to include pro-life, pro-family, pro-poor, pro-racial justice, pro-creation care and pro-peace-making.” The National Evangelical Association’s Richard Cizik uses more casual and colorful language, “The centrists are those of us who don’t engage in armchair Armageddonism.”

The rise of the evangelical center is a sign of a further maturing in American politics — a recognition by Democrats as well as Republicans that faith voters represent a strong current in the mainstream of contemporary American life, not something on the fringe or votes to be taken for granted. Healthy competition for religious votes may, in time, make our politics less divisive by undercutting the destructive idea that any one political party owns the Bible."

As a person whose world view is shaped by the teachings of Jesus, I pray that my faith motivates me to be concerned for others - especially those that are the most vulnerable. And that my vote will not be oriented towards self interest, but will represent what is best overall.

Great points! I need to see if I can catch that even on Youtube, I missed it:)

We are having so much fun with Min Young. You should definitely try having a student sometime, especially with the ages of your kiddos. I think Maren will grow a lot from this experience, but we definitely want to do it again when she's a little older. I had thought of emailing the Priest Sisters:) I really want some tasty recipes, as I had a hard time swallowing our Korean dinner last Friday night. And, according to John, Korean will now be the theme EVERY Friday! It's going to be fun:)
